Four by Veronica Roth

I was so disappointed in how the Divergent series ended in Allegiant, that I almost didn’t want to even think of the series ever again. But somehow, this book got me intrigued and gave me hope for being reminded of the reasons why I used to love Divergent. So I decided to give it a chance, and I am so glad that I did!
Picture
Four is a collection of short stories focusing on Tobias, telling the background story of his life and how he became Four, as well as giving his point of view of the events when he and Tris first met.

I truly enjoyed these additional stories from Four’s POV and the insights at Tobias’s life before Divergent truly happened. I am also so happy that I read this book, as it caused me to remember why I loved the first book so much and brought back so many positive memories about this series again!

Allegiant by Veronica Roth

This is one of my most disappointing reads ever. Allegiant almost ruined the whole series for me and made me stop loving Divergent too. I can’t really go into any details, since it would spoil not only this book, but the entire series, but Allegiant just turned everything upside down in a way that was so beyond a plot twist. It felt dishonest by Veronica Roth, like she broke the trust between her and the readers.
Picture
As an author, you really shouldn’t create a fictional world and set up story premises that got readers to love the plot and world building, only to destroy it all by completely changing the whole concept and foundation of your story in the end. No matter how well written Allegiant was, it still left me feeling tricked in a mean way and utterly disappointed in both the book and in Veronica Roth as an author.

Insurgent by Veronica Roth

In this Divergent sequel, Tris is faced with the consequences of her choices. The story was darker this time and there was more violence and the romance didn’t pick up as much as I had hoped for, but it was nevertheless a very enjoyable and action-packed read.
Picture
Following the events of the first book in the series, the action picked up right away with a war looming because of the growing conflict between the factions and their ideologies. While the first book focused on Tris and her growth, this book focused more on the conspiracies and the struggle to make the right choices. When trying to save the people that she loves, Tris has to struggle with conflicting loyalties and political consequences, but also questions of her own identity, love and forgiveness.

Divergent is one of my favorite dystopians ever and I had such high expectations for this book. I did enjoy it, but not as much as Divergent. It was quite different and felt very much like the typical middle book, mostly providing a bridge to the series finale. I had hoped that the romance would have been allowed some more steam and fire in this book. The chemistry between Tris and Tobias is so great, but for some reason Veronica Roth keeps holding the romance back. She just kept throwing one obstacle after another on them…

But all in all, Insurgent was a truly enjoyable read with a cliff hanger ending that left me speechless and desperate for the next book and series finale!

Divergent by Veronica Roth

This is one of my favorite dystopians ever! I loved the unique world building with a society divided into factions depending on your personal traits, and the set up with teenagers having to select which faction they would devote the rest of their lives to based on an aptitude test. I also really loved the complex characters, especially the fierce and strong female lead, Tris!
Picture
In the future version of Chicago that Tris Prior lives in, society is divided into five factions based on virtues: Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). If you don’t fit into the factions, or break their rules, you are cast out and must live the rest of your life as a fractionless, which is believed to be even worse than death itself. On the day for the aptitude test, which will decide her fraction, Tris gets a very different, and as it turns out, dangerous result.

This action-packed story got me hooked from page one. I absolutely loved this unique and imaginative concept and world building, and how Tris was a new kind of fierce and independent female character. I really appreciated how she was allowed to be complex, with flaws and typical “masculine” traits. And the slow-burning romance part also felt fresh and so sweet. Can’t wait to continue this captivating series!
