I loved, loved, loved The Raven Cycle to pieces and had such high expectations for this book. There were parts in it that I really enjoyed, like the glimpses we got from Gansy’s and Blue’s lives and the parts were Ronan were with Adam, but sadly those parts were way too few. Instead, this book introduced many new characters, which I didn’t connect to at all. And for a majority of the book, they are siloed, and it’s unclear what role they have in the story and how they connect to the plot. What I did love about this book though, was that we got to see more of the Lynch brothers. Matthew is completely adorable, and I appreciated to get to know more of Declan. In The Raven Cycle he was a bit diffuse and one-dimensional, but here he really comes to life. Ronan however didn’t shine as much as he did in The Raven Cycle. There was such a remarkable character development for him throughout the series, especially in the last book where he opens up and truly allows himself to love Adam. But here he felt a bit subdued somehow.
I think the main problem is that this book suffers from the ‘first book’-syndrome, which is such a shame as it really didn’t have to, considering that it’s a spin-off from The Raven Cycle. I still love Ronan and his dreamworld, but I missed the rest of the old crew and their chemistry a lot. Luckily, the story got better in the end though, and I will definitely continue reading this series even though this first book was not exactly what I had hoped for. The Raven Cycle is such a magically wonderful, unique and completely addictive series. It’s something of a paranormal romance combined with a murder, old-fashioned adventures and Welsh mythology. Sounds a bit strange when you try to explain it, but it’s so good! So, so good! All four books are completely addictive and fast-paced, and The Raven King was no exception. This was such a wonderful and fulfilling finale to the series! In this final installment, The Raven King, the story gets even darker than in the third book, almost creepy. There are demons, more dead people and intense blackness and danger. But most of all, there are such amazing characters and remarkable character developments. All the characters have changed and developed so much during this series, which is definitely one of the reasons why I love this series so much. Maggie Stiefvater is a master on making her characters into real persons, showing all their flaws and hidden feelings and desire.
I don’t want to give too much away about the story, since it has its twists and turns, and since it’s difficult to describe in a way that would even be close to do it justice. But it’s an amazing story about friendship, bravery, staying true to yourself and trusting your instincts. And the writing is marvelous, almost poetic of sort, with a perfect mix of reality and magic. And amazingly, the books just keep getting better and better throughout the series. Often, I find that the first book in a series is the best and you feel let down by the sequels, but this is not the case here! The story just increases in character development, action, feelings and intensity all until the crescendoing end. It’s like a modern fairytale set in a contemporary yet magical world. Maggie Stiefvater is a true storyteller who manages to make the book both so easy to read and so complex at the same time. In this third book in the series, Blue Lily, Lily Blue, the story gets darker with absolutely amazing character developments. I read the first book, The Raven Boys, about a month ago and was immediately hooked and ordered the three other books in the series right away. After a long agonizing wait for them to arrive, I binge-read book two yesterday and this one today, and am starting the last book right away. So I’ll probably read all three books in just two days! That’s how addictive and completely unputdownable this series is!

And my heart aches so much for Gansey and Blue, I’m dying for Blue to kiss her true love, curse or not! In this sequel, The Dream Thieves, the story continues with great character growths in another sweet, unique and completely addictive read! This book dragged a little at first, but then it took off with a new twist in the love story and the increased focus on Ronan and Noah. Ronan really grew as a character in this book and from not liking him very much in the first book, I’m now his biggest fan! I’m also a huge fan of the new love twist (don’t want to make any spoilers) but Adam was never the guy for me.
What’s so great with this series, is that even though there is romance, it’s absolutely not the focus. It’s happening more or less in the background and is allowed to take its time. It’s a slow-burn, intense, real love story that adds so much to the overall story without taking over. Instead, focus is on the development of the friendship between Blue and the Raven boys. I love Blue, the heroine so much, and her aunts. Her big bohemian family is so sweet and kind of nuts at the same time.
And the four Raven boys; Gansey, Adam, Noah and Ronan, with all their dark secrets and family problems, and their friendship and love for each other. They will (literally) die for each other. The plot has so many secrets that I can honestly say that I have no idea what will happen in the next book. But I’m dying to find out!
