A Court Of Mist And Fury is the second book in magical the ACOTAR-series by Sarah J Maas. When I read the first book I kept hearing that ACOMAF would be so much better and that I would fall in love with Rhysand. I thought it would be impossible, but no, turned out it wasn’t! ACOMAF is that good! Such an addictive, twist turner! And Rhys is that wonderful… I love that he pushes Feyre to make her own decisions, to be her own person and not someone’s pawn.
And the story is so full of action and tension, there is so much going on. And the twists! This is plotting at its best. I completely agree with all of you who think that ACOMAF is the best book in the series. I do have some minor issues though about how fast Feyre changed from being willing to give her life for Tamlin to despising him and I kind of missed Lucien (until he came along and I suddenly was happy that he had been left out, but I still have my hopes up for Lucien, that he will make the right choices in the end). And I feel a bit tricked. It was so obvious that Sarah J Maas wanted you to change from Team Tamlin to Team Rhysand that I really tried not to, but in the end it was impossible. I do feel bad for Tamlin though. I can understand why he did the things he did, and I kind of wished that he didn’t have to end up like the bad guy in the book. I have to say how much I liked the new secondary characters too, especially Cassian, Azriel and Mor. All their arguments and bickering made the book so much more fun. I also loved how they treated each other as family, looking out for one another and loving each other despite their differences. Wow, this book really lived up to the hype! It absolutely blew me away, and showed me all what a fantasy read can be! I love the world-building and that the story is something of a Beauty and the Beast-story, but with added layers and intensity and characters with depth and flaws. The characters are wonderful and loveable. Feyre is this stubborn, rebellious and to cocky-for-her-own-good girl that you cannot help falling in love with right away, even though you feel like slapping her every now and then for her bad decisions. And Tamlin is so sweet and honorable, you just swoon. But my favorite is probably Lucien, I love his snarkiness and hilarious comments. Rhysand I’m not quite sure what I think about yet, but I’m sure that will crystalize itself onwards.
I love the fantasy world that Sarah J Maas has created. It’s so rich in details and vivid you can really picture all of it. I also love the slow build-up of the relationship between Feyre and Tamlin, how the story allows for Feyre to take her to go from fear and hate to slowly fall in love. The Raven Boys is like a modern fairytale set in a contemporary yet magical world. Maggie Stiefvater is a true storyteller who manages to make the book both so easy to read and so complex at the same time. The Raven Boys is something of a paranormal romance combined with a murder, old-fashioned adventures and Welsh mythology. Sounds a bit strange when you try to explain it, but it’s so good! So, so good! This book is completely addictive and fast-paced, and Maggie Stiefvater does a remarkable job in describing the characters with all their flaws and depths. I love Blue, the heroine so much, and her aunts. Her big bohemian family is so sweet and kind of nuts at the same time.
And the four Raven boys; Gansey, Adam, Noah and Ronan, with all their dark secrets and family problems, and their friendship and love for each other. They will (literally) die for each other. I don’t want to give too much away about the story, since it has its twists and turns, and since it’s difficult to describe in a way that would even be close to do it justice. But it’s an amazing story about friendship, bravery, staying true to yourself and trusting your instincts. And the writing is marvelous, almost poetic of sort, with a perfect mix of reality and magic. I recommend this book with all my heart and can’t wait to continue with the next book in this amazing series! The plot has so many secrets that I can honestly say that I have no idea what will happen in the next book. But I’m dying to find out! In fact, it wasn’t really a romance at all, but a break-up book. But it was still an emotional, fast-paced and enjoyable read. In the story we meet Russell Green who is living the dream, with a beautiful wife, a successful career and an adorable little daughter, when suddenly his life is turned upside down. In a matter of months, Russ finds himself without a job or wife, caring for his young daughter while struggling to adapt to a new and baffling reality.
So, this book had an entirely different feel than I expected for a Nicholas Sparks story. Even though it was a story about a couple falling apart rather than falling in love, I had expected some of the sweetness that is the signature for Nicholas Sparks. I had also expected to be able to relate to the characters, but sadly I really loathed Vivian (the wife in the story) and I couldn’t even understand how she and Russ could ever have been in love. And even though my heart ached for Russ, I didn’t really connect with him either. I often wanted to tell him to find his back bone and stop being such a people pleaser and door mat… But of course, Nicholas Sparks managed to pull at some heart strings with the adorable father-daughter relationship. And overall, it was a well written, enjoyable and fast-paced story (I read it all in less than a day), even though I didn’t get any of the happy, fluffy, sweetness I had hoped for.
